POEMS - 2005 - The Genius

THE GENIUS

I once told God that if He was real

I would treat Him like He was real.

I would take him everywhere with me,

And set a place for Him at the table.

But it didn’t take long to leave Him behind,

To completely leave Him out of the picture.

So I tried again to give God a place,

But to no avail ... I failed.

So one day I tied a string around my finger,

And I  was very impressed with myself.

I looked at the string and remembered …

God is with me … here and now.

This however did not impress God very much.

“Tell your family”, he said,

“That you need a piece of string around your finger,

To remind yourself that they exist.”

“Point taken”, I said, most embarrassed.

“If only I could see you … things would be different,” I replied.

“Fine,” he said, “I am coming for dinner.”

Coming for dinner?

What do you mean coming for dinner?

I was so overwhelmed … that I lost sight of God … again.

Then it hit me … then I knew.

The genius of it all !

Spirit to spirit …

Anyone … anywhere … anytime … all the time …

No distractions …

No strings attached …

Not on my finger …

Not on my heart ...

A genius knows how to spend time with a friend.
